Intent
At Upper Arley, we encourage our children to show curiosity and we thrive upon the enthusiasm they portray when exploring within the world they live in – from their locality, surrounding areas and the wider world and to have an understanding of their place within it. We believe that Geography helps to provoke and provide answers to questions about the natural and the human aspects of the world. Geography enables children to develop knowledge and skills that are transferable to other curriculum areas and which can and are used to promote our school values, as well as their spiritual, moral, social and cultural development.
We seek to inspire in children a fascination about the world and its people through critical thinking, resilience and collaboration, equipping them for their future aspirations and the rest of their lives.
Implementation
Our geography curriculum is carefully designed to support children in building the progressive knowledge required through the four main aspects of the subject: locational knowledge, place knowledge, human and physical geography and geographical skills and fieldwork. It also identifies the specific vocabulary and geographical terminology children need in order to become enthusiastic, confident geographers. In order to enhance the children’s geographical experiences, we plan trips and visitors linked to their current learning.
Geography will help to develop skills that children will be able to transfer and use across the curriculum. Children will have the opportunity to conduct research and investigation using these skills which might include: collecting and analysing data; using maps and atlases; globes, aerial photographs and digital mapping; and communicating information in a variety of ways.
At Upper Arley, we encourage the children to go out ‘into the field’ wherever possible in order to provide purposeful and first- hand experiences for the children as well as enhancing their understanding when comparing their lives in this locality to other regions in the United Kingdom, and in the rest of the world. Drawing on successive learning experiences, Children will continue build an awareness of diverse places, people, resources, and natural and human environments, together with a deep understanding of the Earth’s key physical and human processes.
We encourage our children to become motivated to think critically about some of the World’s most current geographical issues with which we are faced. Our pupils will form opinions and ideas for sustainable development and global citizenship and how their lives and others’ can have an impact on our world now and the future.
