As a Church of England school, we ensure that the social, moral, spiritual and cultural development is at the heart of our school community and curriculum.
Every child at Upper Arley C of E School is valued for their uniqueness. Our PSHE education helps our children to recognise this and develop understanding of others to celebrate diversity within their school community and the wider world. Our PSHE curriculum ensures that our children are given opportunities to develop their academic, emotional, spiritual, and moral potential, which will enable them to become healthy, independent, and responsible members of their local and global society. It offers pathways to consider many of the critical opportunities, challenges, and responsibilities that our children will face as they grow up, preparing them for life and work in modern Britain and the wider world. We support our children in learning about their rights and responsibilities through British Values and enhance learning in PSHE through experiences such as school trips, visitors, workshops and participation in national events such as Anti-Bullying Week, NSPCC Stay Safe Campaign and E-Safety Week.
At Upper Arley C of E School we believe that learners who achieve emotional and physical wellbeing are better able to reach their true potential within school and throughout their future life. Our PSHE education supports them to see and strive for this potential by educating them about tackling issues that can affect their self-worth and ability to learn. Our PSHE education also helps our learners to develop skills and aptitudes – like teamwork, communication, and resilience, crucial in navigating the challenges and opportunities of the world they will play a part in shaping.
Intent
Our intention is that our children leave Upper Arley C of E School, with the knowledge, understanding and emotions to be able to play an active, positive and successful role in today’s diverse society. We want our children to have high aspirations, a belief in themselves and realise that anything is possible with the right effort and support. No ambition is beyond them, no challenge is too great in an ever-changing world drawing on the understanding that they….”can do all this through Christ because he gives me strength.” (Philippians 4:13)
Our PSHE curriculum develops learning and results in the acquisition of knowledge and skills which will enable children to access the wider curriculum and prepare them to be a global citizen now and in their future roles within a global community. It promotes the spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development of pupils, preparing them for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences for later life. Our Relationships and Sex Education enables our children to learn how to be safe, and to understand and develop healthy relationships, both now and in their future lives.
Implementation
EYFS - In the Foundation Stage, PSHE and citizenship is taught as an integral part of topic work and is embedded throughout the curriculum. The objectives taught are the Personal, Social and Emotional Development statements from ‘Development Matters in the EYFS’ and the PSED Early Learning Goals. Reception uses the Kapow Scheme of Work materials.
Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 - At Key Stage 1 and 2, PSHE is taught through a clear and comprehensive scheme of work in line with the National Curriculum. We ensure we cover the Health and Well-Being, Relationships and Living in the Wider World set out in the Kapow Programme of Study, which includes the statutory Health Education and Relationships Education guidance.
Pupils are taught PSHE through the supportive structure of ‘Kapow’ which is a progressive scheme of work, and aims to prepare children for life, helping them to know and value who they are and understand how they relate to other people in this ever-changing world. There is a strong emphasis on emotional literacy, building resilience and nurturing mental and physical health. It includes opportunities for children to advance their emotional awareness, concentration and focus.
At Upper Arley C of E School, in addition to Relationships Education, we also teach aspects of Sex Education that is covered in our Science Curriculum. PSHE also includes links to British Values, and SMSC and is taught in such a way as to reflect the overall aims, values, and Christian vision of the school.
Wider Curriculum
Within our uniquely Christian ethos we aim to:
- We believe that focusing on developing the character and spirituality of our children will promote a positive attitude to life-long learning, nurturing the development of self-esteem; leading to aspirational, independent learners that are prepared to be challenged and take risks in a diverse and ever changing world. This supports both our school’s Christian vision and PSHE aims and values, and we focus on these drivers in all aspects of school life.
- Provide the children with valuable experiences and opportunities, through an exciting curriculum, where learning is purposeful and engaging and personalised. Visitors such as emergency services, council representatives, financia , cultural and economic visitors complement our PSHE curriculum to offer additional learning.
- Use a variety of teaching strategies and resources effectively and creatively; encouraging each child to progress and attain to the highest possible standards
- Strongly believe in the partnership of parental involvement in the education of our pupils.
- Demonstrate and foster respect for ourselves and others within the school, local and global community.
- Respect the belief of others and celebrate cultural diversity.
- We encourage our pupils to develop their sense of self-worth by playing a positive role in contributing to school life and the wider community. We challenge all our pupils to look for opportunities to show the school values of one community, learning and growing together, sharing god’s love
- Explicitly promote the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.
- Value each child as an individual within the school and respect personal beliefs.
- Assemblies and worship include links to PSHE, British Values and SMSC as well as reflecting significant current affairs to support our children
- Displays throughout school reinforce the PSHE curriculum enabling children to make links with PSHE, BV and SMSC
