Welcome to Owls Class!

Hello Owls Class,

We hope you’ve had a lovely October break and that you are feeling well rested and ready to continue your learning journey!

This half term our new topic is called ‘Things That Go Bump in the Night‘. We will be exploring different habitats and nocturnal animals, using different sources to take a journey back to 1666 (where we will learn all about the Great Fire of London), and will be beginning our Christmas festivities (yes, that includes the Christmas Nativity)!

We look forward to spending this half term with you!

Miss Bridges and Mrs Stokes.

Little Owls (Reception)

During the children’s time in Foundation Stage, the curriculum is based on the Early Years Foundation Stage. This curriculum focus on play and exploration; active learning; and creating and thinking critically. The EYFS is based upon four main principles, each of which build the foundations for the learning, development and care of our Little Owls:

  • The unique child;
  • Positive relationships;
  • Enabling environments;
  • Learning and development.

Barn and Tawny Owls (KS1)

Whilst these principles continue into KS1 and play-based learning still features heavily, our aim is that by the time children enter Year 1 they have developed skills that enable them to embrace and flourish in a more structured approach to learning. By Year 2, open-ended play becomes more project-based and challenge orientated in order to meet the learning that is expected in the Year 2 National Curriculum. Whilst the staff in Owls Class work hard to ensure each year group maintains their group’s identity, mixed-age teaching creates a greater focus on individualisation and greatly supports the differentiation within the areas of learning. Children are taught in small, mixed-age groups throughout the day, enabling staff to effectively tailor teaching and learning to the needs of the group.

Continuous Provision – Learning through play and exploration

In Owls Class, we strongly believe that young children learn best through play and exploration. Therefore, our classroom is organised to promote and develop continuous provision. Owls’ classroom and outdoor learning environment is set up so that children have freedom over their own learning, whereby they learn through personal interests and natural curiosity. Whilst out Little Owls are provided with large chunks of child initiated learning throughout the day, our Barn and Tawny Owls access continue provision through carefully planned daily/weekly challenges that promote the application of previously taught skills and to ensure progression.
